Driving Resources for Pennsylvania Learners

The official PennDOT pages you actually need, the rules that catch people out, and our own plain-English guides — organized by where you are in the process.

If English is not your first language

The PA Driver's Manual in your language

This is the part most learners never find out about — and it is the single biggest shortcut to passing the knowledge test.

📚 18 languages as PDFs

PennDOT publishes the Driver's Manual as a downloadable PDF in eighteen of the most requested languages, not only English and Spanish. If you read more comfortably in your first language, study from that version — the test questions are the same.

🌐 100+ languages online

The online version of the manual is a translatable page, so the Commonwealth's translation tool can render it in over a hundred languages. It also works with screen readers and other accessibility software.

And lessons in the language you think in

Reading the manual in your language helps you pass the knowledge test. Being taught in your language is what makes you a confident driver.

Do not get turned away

What PennDOT requires before your road test

Every year learners arrive at a Driver License Center and are sent home over a missing document or an unmet practice requirement. Here is what to check.

⏱️ The 65-hour rule (under 18)

If you are under 18, PennDOT requires at least 65 hours of behind-the-wheel practice before you may take the road test. Within that total you need no fewer than 10 hours at night and 5 hours in bad weather. A parent or guardian certifies these hours, so start logging them the day you get your permit.

🗂️ What to bring on the day

PennDOT expects all of the following, and will not test you without them:

  • Your valid learner's permit
  • The valid registration card for the car you are testing in
  • Proof that the car is currently insured
  • A licensed driver aged 21 or over to accompany you — or a parent, guardian or spouse aged 18 or over

🚗 No car for the test?

The car you test in must be registered, insured and roadworthy — which rules out a surprising number of families. We supply an inspected, insured dual-control car and drive you to the center, with a warm-up on the way.

📍 Know the center before you go

Each PennDOT center has its own routes, parking and quirks. Practicing on the actual roads an examiner will use is the best preparation there is.
