Free practice quiz
PA permit practice test
The real PennDOT knowledge test asks 18 questions and you need 15 correct to pass. This free practice quiz has 126 questions drawn from the official PA Driver's Manual — far more repetition than the real thing, so nothing on test day catches you off guard. Answer them all, then check your score instantly — no sign-up, nothing to download.
This is a free practice tool, not the official exam. Questions are written from the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (PUB 95); the real test draws from a larger pool. Ready for the behind-the-wheel part? See lesson pricing or take the road test in our car.
What the real PA knowledge test covers
PennDOT draws its 18 questions from the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (PUB 95), and they cluster into a handful of predictable topics. If you can answer these confidently, the exam holds few surprises:
- Speed limits. 25 mph in a residential district unless posted otherwise, 15 mph in an active school zone, 65 mph only where signed on limited-access highways.
- Signs, signals and markings. Shape and color tell you the meaning before you can read the words — an octagon is always a stop, a yellow diamond always a warning, a solid white line discourages a lane change while a solid yellow forbids passing.
- Right of way. Four-way stops, uncontrolled intersections, left turns across traffic, and yielding to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks alike.
- School buses and emergency vehicles. Stop at least ten feet from a bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm out, in both directions unless divided by a barrier. Pennsylvania's Steer Clear law requires you to move over or slow down for emergency responders.
- Following distance and stopping. Four seconds in good conditions, more in rain, snow or fog — and remember that stopping distance grows with the square of your speed, not in step with it.
- Alcohol, drugs and penalties. A 0.08% BAC limit for drivers 21 and over, 0.02% for anyone under 21, and Pennsylvania's implied-consent rule on chemical testing.
- Permit and licensing rules. Who may supervise you, the 65-hour practice requirement for under-18 drivers, and the junior-license night and passenger restrictions.
The one topic that catches people out is not a rule at all: how much of the manual they skipped. Read it twice, take this quiz until you're barely missing any, then book the test.
Questions we get about the permit test
How many questions are on the PA permit test? +
Eighteen multiple-choice questions, drawn from the PA Driver's Manual. You need 15 correct — that's a passing score of about 83%. You also take a vision screening at the same visit.
How many questions are in your practice quiz? +
126 — far more than the real 18-question PennDOT exam, so you get broad repetition instead of memorizing a short list. It's scored instantly, with an explanation for every answer, and the passing bar is scaled to the same 83% the real test requires.
What happens if I fail the knowledge test? +
You can retake it from the next business day, while your DL-180 is still valid (a year from the date of your physical). Use the gap to re-read the manual, which matters more than memorizing a practice quiz.
Is the PA knowledge test available in other languages? +
Yes — PennDOT offers the knowledge test in several languages, and audio versions are available for applicants who need them. Ask at the counter when you arrive. Our own lessons are taught in English, Hindi, Urdu, Bangla and Arabic, so you can learn in the language you think in.
Do I need the DL-180 form before the test? +
Yes. First-time applicants need a completed DL-180 physical exam form signed by a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or chiropractor, plus original proof of identity, a Social Security card, and, if you're 18 or older, two proofs of Pennsylvania residency. Turning up without it is the single most common wasted trip. Our permit requirements guide lists every document.
How soon after the permit can I take the road test? +
If you're under 18, you must hold the permit for at least six months and log 65 hours of supervised practice — 10 at night and 5 in poor weather — before the road test. Adults 18 and over have no minimum holding period, but still need to be genuinely ready. See what the road test involves.
Passed the practice test? Here's your next step
Once you hold your learner's permit, Pennsylvania requires 65 hours of supervised practice (if you're under 18) before the road test — and every hour counts more with a professional in the passenger seat. Our instructors teach in English, Hindi, Urdu, Bangla and Arabic, with free door-to-door pickup across 100+ Greater Philadelphia towns.
